As an older adult you may be more prone to falling, yet there are proactive measures to implement which can reduce your risk. Stay active with everyday activities and gentle exercise such as Tai Chi to keep muscles strong and improve balance. Clear your home of tripping hazards like clutter and loose throw rugs. Tips for Your Child’s Footwear

As a child grows, having properly fitting footwear is important for the development of their feet. When choosing shoes for your child there are a few things that can be implemented to ensure their shoes fit properly. Since our feet are largest at the end of the day, shopping in the evening will help to make sure the shoes aren’t too tight. Measure your child's feet when they are standing and bearing their full weight, and be sure to measure and fit the shoes with the socks your child intends to wear with the shoes. It is also important to check that there is enough room for your child to wiggle their toes in the shoes and that the heel fits snug. Lastly, your child should walk in the shoes before purchasing them and they should immediately feel comfortable. If you have any questions about making sure your child’s shoes fit properly, a podiatrist will be able to help and make the best recommendations.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Sesamoid Bones and Injuries

The sesamoids are two small, pea-shaped bones found just under the base of the big toe. The sesamoids are embedded in a tendon, allowing you to move the big toes and acting as shock absorbers in the foot while you walk and run. Though these bones are quite small, they can be easily injured. The area around the sesamoid bones may become inflamed due to injury or overuse, leading to sesamoiditis. Over time, these bones may become unable to bear the load placed on them and could even develop tiny stress fractures. A sudden injury to the bones can cause them to fully fracture. Sesamoiditis
